Archival Studies: The Vintage Era of Automotive Design
Celebrating the uncompromising union of sculptural geometry and mechanical genius, the collection explores the pioneering craftsmanship of early European and continental automotive history. Spanning an archival timeline from a 1997 field study along the streets of London, England, to the prestigious 18th fairway of the 59th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the USA, William Curtis Rolf’s compositions look past traditional automotive photography to treat historic machines as rolling fine-art sculptures.
The photographer's lens isolates the striking balance between raw mechanical layout and artisan finishes—from the aerodynamic, teardrop contours of pre-war Bugatti silhouettes and the massive, industrial grilles of legendary Le Mans Bentleys to close-up macro studies of white enamel dashboard dials and polished chrome radiator caps. Rendered primarily in rich, warm archival sepia tones and high-contrast monochrome, the grand-scale exhibition prints capture the enduring textures of original race-worn patina, gleaming metalwork, and classical lines to deliver a sophisticated, timeless visual narrative.
Grand-scale prints from the archival collection are held in prestigious private collections worldwide. Our studio collaborates closely with architectural firms, art consultants, and design professionals to tailor exhibition‑scale formats, spatial integration, and trade pricing for each project.
